»Less Thought Equals More Money
Roger Keynes, an out of work writer, delivered these hand crafted business cards to anyone who would take them. Hoping his initiative would win over the wallets of people with job offerings. It hasn’t happened but he said he has been contacted by numerous ad agencies for freelance gigs.
What caught my attention is the wording he used, “Will Think For Salary.” Perhaps he would have gotten more attention had he said, “Will Do No Thinking For Salary.” I used to get annoyed when my bosses did stupid things. Even more so when they asked me to do stupid things. For example, after a staff meeting where you discuss priorities, you may think the email from your boss an hour later asking what your priorities are is redundant. Or when you, who isn’t even middle management, is asked to find out why a Director of a department hasn’t done something yet, and you try to explain to your boss the awkwardness of essentially asking a superior if they know how to do their job.
Perhaps you just see an obvious flaw in operations and you would like to avoid the extra work it causes you. You do some independent thinking and suggest an alternative. The alternative is considered, decided to be a good idea, then immediately abandoned when it comes time to enact your grand idea.
And so my friends, the sad truth is, do not think. Sad, yes. Revelation too. Ever since I stopped asking my boss why or how instead of just doing whatever inane request is placed upon me, my stress had been greatly reduced. So next time you stare at your boss’ email asking for the recap to the meeting he or she also attended, just do it. You will be much happier in the end.
